Private institution "National Laboratory Astana" (hereinafter - NLA) was created by renaming the private institution "Center for Life Sciences" by the decision of the Governing Board of the autonomous educational organization "Nazarbayev University" on March 31, 2015.
The main objectives of the NLA are to conduct multidisciplinary basic and/or applied scientific research in the life sciences, energy, interdisciplinary and other fields of science, as well as activities to establish scientific laboratory, experimental bases, centers, institutes for the development and implementation of scientific, scientific and technical, educational programs and training of specialists.
It is important to note that NLA attaches particular importance to building its human resource capacity to achieve its goals and objectives. Today, there are 143 researchers working in NLA Centers, including 56 (39%) Doctors, PhDs and 56 (39%) Masters, more than half of whom are Bolashak graduates.

In the NLA, there are currently two Centers:
  • Life Science Center (CLS);
  • Center for Energy and New Materials Science (CEAMS)
There are currently 12 laboratories in the aforementioned NLA centers, 8 of which represent the CLS and 4 represent the CENNM.
The subject of NLA's activities are:
  • Мultidisciplinary basic and/or applied scientific research;
  • Scientific research in the field of biomedicine, including personal, translational and regenerative medicine, genomics and longevity medicine, biology and pharmacy;
  • Scientific research, experimental and development works in the field of energy research, including the search for alternative types of energy, renewable energy, new types of energy, development of the production sphere of energy, physics, chemistry and other areas;
  • Research, experimental and design works on development of information and communication technologies, deep processing of raw materials, mechanical engineering, interdisciplinary and other areas;
  • Organization of a complex of events aimed at creation and development of integrated model of medical education, science and clinical practice;
  • Creation and development of scientific-laboratory, experimental bases, centers, institutes for conduction of scientific researches, experimental-design works;
  • Formation of human resources potential through training and retraining of pedagogical and scientific personnel, highly qualified specialists and managers;
  • Creation of a multi-vector system of cooperation with leading research centers, higher education institutions and other organizations;
  • Development of educational programs and training courses in various fields of science, including experimental scientific and educational programs;
  • Organization of events aimed at commercialization of developed scientific technologies and products of creative and intellectual labor;
  • Formation and development of scientific cooperation through organization of forums and conferences in life sciences, energy, interdisciplinary and other fields of science, including the involvement of international experts and organizations;
  • Taking part in development and implementation of regulatory legal, methodological and other documentation within the authority of the NLA;
  • Implementation of interaction with governmental agencies and other organizations on activities of the Institution;
  • Participation in development of integrated academic health care system of the Founder
