Official Launch of the InterPore Kazakhstan Chapter
A Historic Milestone for Porous Media Research in Central Asia
The International Conference on AI & Digital Modelling in Energy (AIDME-2026) is honoured to host the official establishment and inaugural launch of the InterPore Kazakhstan Chapter.

Following approval by the Executive Committee of the International Society for Porous Media (InterPore), the Kazakhstan Chapter will become the Society's official national chapter in Kazakhstan. Its establishment marks an important milestone for the country's scientific community and, as the first InterPore Chapter in Central Asia, creates a new regional hub for porous media research, international collaboration, and scientific exchange.

The launch represents both a recognition of the growing excellence of porous media research in Kazakhstan and a commitment to strengthening collaboration between researchers in Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and the wider international InterPore community.
About InterPore
InterPore (the International Society for Porous Media) is the leading international scientific society dedicated to the advancement of porous media science and technology. Since its establishment in 2008, InterPore has brought together researchers from engineering, geosciences, environmental sciences, physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, and materials science to improve the understanding of flow, transport, deformation, and coupled processes in natural and engineered porous materials.

Today, InterPore connects thousands of researchers worldwide through its annual international conference, regional chapters, educational initiatives, scientific publications, and professional networking activities, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration between academia, research institutes, and industry.

Why a Kazakhstan Chapter?

Porous media research underpins many of today's most important scientific and engineering challenges, including:

  • Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS)
  • Groundwater resources
  • Soil and aquifer remediation
  • Geothermal energy
  • Underground hydrogen and energy storage
  • Oil and gas recovery
  • Critical raw materials
  • Advanced porous materials
  • Filtration and separation technologies
  • Sustainable environmental management

Kazakhstan has developed growing expertise across many of these research areas and is increasingly engaged in international scientific collaboration. The establishment of the Kazakhstan Chapter provides an institutional framework for bringing together researchers working across these disciplines while strengthening connections with the global InterPore community.

Why Does It Matter?

The establishment of the InterPore Kazakhstan Chapter extends beyond the creation of a national scientific chapter.
It represents an investment in the long-term development of porous media research throughout Kazakhstan and Central Asia by creating a platform that will:

  • Strengthen collaboration between universities, research institutes, industry, and government.
  • Connect researchers from Central Asia with the international scientific community.
  • Support students and early-career researchers through networking and professional development.
  • Encourage interdisciplinary research addressing global energy and environmental challenges.
  • Increase the international visibility of research conducted in Kazakhstan and the region.

The Chapter is expected to become an important catalyst for international partnerships and scientific cooperation across disciplines where porous media play a fundamental role.

Official Launch at AIDME-2026
The official inauguration of the InterPore Kazakhstan Chapter will take place during AIDME-2026, held at Nazarbayev University, Astana, on 5–8 August 2026.

The launch has been incorporated into the conference programme because of the close scientific connections between porous media research and the conference themes of digital modelling, artificial intelligence, energy systems, subsurface engineering, and sustainability.

The special launch event, scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday, 5 August, will include:

  • Official inauguration of the InterPore Kazakhstan Chapter
  • Welcome addresses from InterPore and conference representatives
  • Introduction to InterPore and its global activities
  • Presentation of the vision and future objectives of the Kazakhstan Chapter
  • Keynote lectures delivered by internationally recognised members of the InterPore community
  • Invited scientific presentations
  • Networking and discussion

This event marks the beginning of what is envisioned to become a regular series of independent scientific activities organised by the Kazakhstan Chapter in the years ahead.
Distinguished Speakers
The launch event will feature keynote lectures by internationally recognised scientists from the InterPore community together with leading researchers from Kazakhstan and abroad. The list of keynote and invited speakers will be announced shortly.
