Monitoring of medicinal substances in waste and surface waters of Nur-Sultan and its environs.
The main ways of pollution of biosphere with drugs are household and industrial wastewater, which consists of broad spectrum of drugs. The development of solution approaches of these polluted wastewater problems is important for Kazakhstan since wastewater from hospitals and household activities returns back to nature after going through the conventional treatment procedures without additional activities on removal of drugs. Possibly, the current situation with COVID-119 caused the increase of consumption of drugs, especially antibiotics, and as a consequence, substantially high concentrations broad spectrum of drugs and their metabolites on the surface and wastewaters. In this project the main attention is given for conducting the monitoring of drugs since according to literature data there is no related work for Nur-Sultan city.
The novelty and relevance lies in obtaining data of drugs contents in natural and wastewater of Nur-Sultan city. The current examination is of high importance in the field of assessment of water quality for preservation of environment as well as for adaptation of new approaches and methods of treatment of drugs.
The aim is to conduct a monitoring of drugs in urban waste and surface waste waters of the city of Nur-Sultan and its neighborhood.
The result is obtaining data on the detection of drugs in urban wastewater and assessing the efficiency of their removal to reduce environmental stress for the population and the environment. The implementation of the project will allow to systematize and analyze the current state of pollution of water with drugs and propose recommendations for assessing the potential hazard of such pollution and measures to reduce it.
Preliminary results revealed a difference in the content of various chemicals in water samples. The concentrations of the studied parameters depended on the quality of water (effluent or surface), the type of reservoir (river, lake), and the presence of a current (flowing-standing). Analysis of the samples by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed the presence of certain drugs in the wastewater samples from the wastewater treatment plant in Nur-Sultan. For the first time, derivatives of such drugs as sulfamethoxazole, metronidazole and carbamazepine were identified. The data obtained indicate the presence of these substances in wastewater, but at the same time, in the process of wastewater treatment, their water retention decreases. In this regard, there is a need to improve the wastewater treatment system for the complete removal of drugs.
